What is COPD? Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an ongoing and progressive respiratory condition that is caused by damage to the small airways of the lungs. This damage causes the airways to become inflamed which limits air movement and the ability to clear secretions. In Canada, over 2 million people currently suffer from COPD and it is the third leading cause of death. Without treatment, this disease can become debilitating, but with treatment COPD is treatable and manageable. A detailed oximetry report will be shared with the client and their doctor outlining any areas of concern. This will also give the client a good representational; Medication Review Using respiratory medications correctly is one of the most effective ways to control the symptoms of COPD. Current research shows that 50-80% of COPD patients use their medications incorrectly. We will review, not only the reasons for your different respiratory medications, but the proper use of that medication. Breathing Techniques One of the biggest life limiting factors of COPD is the sensation of shortness of breath with exertion. This often takes a very large toll on the patient’s quality of life. Having to limit quality time with friends and family, change routines or even give up on hobbies that bring them joy and purpose. These changes and sacrifices can cause patients to become depressed. Our Respiratory Therapists teach breathing techniques that help our patients to recover from exertion faster giving them the confidence to get back to doing the things that they love.
